LAVA was chosen by Wallpaper* magazine to create a light in collaboration with Philips. The lamp, Evolution, was on display at the Handmade exhibition during the Milan Design Fair in 2011.
The challenge was to re-imagine an object that everybody knows well. LAVA's playful reinterpretation of a sculptural table lamp was inspired by the growth in plants.
The lamp was a ‘new design language in luminaire design’. The desk light is a friendly product, based on a humanistic design concept while delivering state of the art LED technology. The design posed technical challenges such as thermal management and a complex double curved shape. However, close collaboration with Philips ensured that the Evolution lamp exceeded expectations in terms of design and engineering.
LAVA imagined the design at many scales, from a living room lamp of human height to a desk light. LAVA has designed a number of furniture and lighting objects on various scales. But design in that sense is scale-less, the scale can be transferred up and down. The organisational pattern of a leaf can be the same as that underlying a plan for an entire city.
Leading international designers, manufacturers and craftsmen created a unique collection for Handmade, also featured in the magazine’s August 2011 issue.
